Education as consolation
EDUCATION AS CONSOLATION
Summary & Explanation of theme
Hector is a teacher who believes in the value of art, and he teaches knowledge without any practical application; it is for the “heart” ⇒ PAIN is the best education
“All literature is consolation” ~ Dakin
CONSOLATION
- He sees knowledge as a way to aid personal growth & inspire wisdom in the students – that is the primary importance of his teaching
- A method to comfort & soothe emotional pain – the Boys should use education as a tool to help them through painful experiences
- Hector wants the Boys to memorise literature texts by heart, in order to save these lessons of poetry and literature for life’s inevitable hardships
- Fall back on literature – at any point in life
- The Boys want to think that getting into Oxbridge will give them all the happiness they need in life – BUT Hector suggests that after this ‘mark’ of success – life continues, and you need education to help you get through it
ENRICHMENT
- Enrichment – develop cultural knowledge and understanding – endows a person with the lifelong ability to enjoy all diverse arts around them – direct attack on Irwin’s and HM’s view of education
- Threatens Thatcherism (1980s) – summarised by Irwin’s teaching methods
- Hector also suggests that education is a way to completely relish the joys of life – by understanding history, poetry and all literature – lifelong enrichment – in order to make your life exquisite, elegant and rich
- Hector revers all the literature he teaches the Boys – it is a “[component] of the heart”
- expresses the importance of understanding the feeling and emotion that literature delivers.
- Hector forms a personal connection with literature – that is why he instructs the Boys to learn poetry & literature off by heart, so they can remember it for life.
- Education is much more significant part of their lives – instead of just being a means to an end!
- Hector’s teachings reflect that one must feel freedom with literature rather than allowing social systems to determine and define the role of education in schools.
Limitations of Hector’s education philosophy
- Lack of practical purpose & usefulness makes Hector’s teachings inadequate and ultimately obsolete for the competitive schooling environment – immeasurable & unquantifiable (HM)
- Therefore, Hector’s concept of education clash with the contemporary (modern-day) educational policies that requires different teaching methods – and various skills and knowledge that Hector considers the “enemy of education”
- Education is for the present; not just to comfort you for later
