Women and men
Women and men
- Main idea in this time was that women are in the background to men (they are secondary people, so not to be given significant roles in society)
- Women are sexual objects who are ‘used’ ⇒ very rude and inconsiderate behaviour ⇒ e.g. Fiona as a “Western Front”, shows Dakin’s limited view of a relationship ⇒ he does not see that relationships are about emotional connections, not sexual pleasure
- Women are not appreciated by men
- However, contrary to what the Headmaster would believe, women are more rational and smart than men in their abilities
- Men seem to get “carried away” with the “bow wow school history” ⇒ this conveys that men are immature and overly eager
- Mrs. Lintott’s description of a female interviewer raises uncertainty and doubts in the Boys’ mind
- Dakin finds it “dispiriting” – showing how he does not see women as having an important role in society (as an interviewer)
- Timms says “It’s not our fault Miss. It’s just the way it is” ⇒ “it” is the male-focussed educational system that has regarded women as not powerful or capable of carrying out important roles
- Lack of relationships between men and women
- e.g. between Hector and his wife
